Used by the Lithuanian Border Guard (including the special forces team ‘ARAS‘) from its inception in 1992 until 2003 (where it was replaced by the Eurocopter EC120B, and later the Eurocopter EC135T2+ and EC145), the Kamov Ka-26 ‘Hoodlum-A’ provided the team with the ability to move quickly and to rappel down onto various areas (such as roofs of buildings).
The Ka-26 first flew in 1965, and was designed with several missions in mind, including agricultural, transport, medical evac, search and rescue, and law enforcement. In the passenger role, it consists of a small crew compartment for two crewmembers, and a separate passenger compartment with two folding benches for six total people. The Ka-26 has a door on each side, and one in the rear to the removable passenger compartment.
In other variations, the passenger compartment can be removed and replaced with several other types of cargo equipment, including liquid sprayers (for agricultural spraying) or a winch.
The Ka-26 burns 19.4 gallons of aviation gas per hour at cruising speed. A full load of fuel is $68. Visibility is good.

Design Notes
Structure is medium, expensive, with no streamlining. Armor is standard composite. Mechanical controls. Fuel tank is light, self-sealing. Empty weight is 3,003 lbs. Performance is determined by adding 5 for each engine, as they are mounted in pod-like structures on the side of the body. Designed aSpeed is 131 mph, but actual aSpeed is 105 mph. Each Ka-26 costs $381,000.
The version presented is used by the Lithuanian Counter-terrorist unit “Aras”.

I was startled to see a helicopter as recent as this with a reciprocating engine, but it’s true.

Reading about the issues they had with her engines (and lack of power), I certainly would be more nervous about riding in the helo, then making a raid against the Russian mafia!
